How to Grow:
Jade vines (Strongylodon macrobtrys) grow in the tropical rainforest and are native to the Philippines. This evergreen vine grows rapidly and produces thick, woody stems and blue-colored, claw-shaped flowers in spring. Thriving in U.S. Department of Agriculture plant hardiness zones 10 and 11, jade plants do not tolerate frost or cold. They produce 2-inch-long pods after flowering that contain up to 12 seeds.
Starting Seeds
You can start jade seeds indoors or outdoors in their plant hardiness zones. Plant seeds as soon as they ripen, because they have a short period of viability. Jade seeds do not require pretreatment, but to speed germination you can slightly scarify seeds using fine sandpaper or soak them in warm water for two to four hours. Seeds must have a soil temperature of at least 80 degrees Fahrenheit to germinate properly.
Planting Seeds
Sow jade seeds 1/4 to 1/3 inch deep in well-draining soil in an area with full sun to partial shade. You can start seeds indoors by preparing a growing medium of equal parts perlite, fine grit and vermiculite. The growing medium or soil for the seeds should be moist, but not too wet. Jade seeds rot in wet soil. Seeds germinate in about three weeks.
Transplanting Seedlings
Once jade seedlings emerge and produce a few sets or true leaves, you can repot them into 6 inch pots filled with well-draining growing medium. Allow seedlings to remain in the posts until pot bound, at which time you can transplant seedlings outdoors. You can also grow jade vines indoors as long you repot them when needed and give the vines proper support.
Caring for Vines
Jade vines grow best in temperature of at least 60 degrees, and in an area where the plant tops receive sun and the roots are shaded. Vines grow rapidly up to 70 feet tall and look best when grown over a pergola or other tall support. Because vines are native to tropical rainforests, you can water vines freely during summer, but sparingly in the winter. Mature jade vines attract butterflies and bees.
